Burning firewood that keeps your flue cleaner

Choosing the right firewood can help maintain a cleaner chimney flue.

Seasoned Firewood

Using seasoned firewood is crucial for a cleaner burn. Wood that has been properly dried (seasoned) for at least six months has reduced moisture content.

Seasoned wood burns hotter and cleaner, reducing the amount of creosote—a flammable by-product—that forms in your chimney flue.

Types of Wood to Use

Hardwoods like oak, maple, and ash are excellent choices for firewood. They burn hotter and produce less creosote than softwoods.

Avoid green or soft woods like pine that contain a higher sap content, which can increase creosote buildup, posing a higher risk of chimney fires.

Proper Storage Practices

Store your firewood in a dry place, off the ground, and covered to ensure it stays dry. This helps maintain low moisture levels.

Proper storage not only ensures better burning efficiency but also reduces the risk of pests or mold in the woodpile.
